He scoffed, shaking his head. "Women and directions..." he muttered, smiling still. "You need like, I dunno, help? I know which way the parking lot exit is at least." He shrugged, trying to recall whether or not he indeed know where that was. Stopping mid run might of messed him up a bit. "That is if you want help..." He didn't know her name, so he merely trailed off, looking to her expectantly.

"Alice," she supplied easily. "And nah, I'm probably just gonna walk around more until it gets light out. My parents probably won't care if they wake up and I'm gone. It's happened before; they don't really give a shit where I am." Her light, pleasant tone was a strong contrast to the words she spoke. "And what's your name?" She smiled a bit before adding, "I'll have you know I'm usually excellent with directions. I wasn't really paying attention to where I was going, and it's dark..."

"Yeah OKAY." he joked, re-aligning his body so he was standing sans the support of the tree. "Keep telling yourself that, Alice. It's Zuri by the way." He yanked up the sleeves on his sweatshirt, enjoying the cool air on his bare arms. "This may sound a little froward, but you mind if I join you? If it's not too weird that is." He looked at her earnestly, no alternative motives noticeable.

"No, no, it's fine," she replied. She was never one to pass up company; much as she liked being alone, she also liked being with someone. "Zuri, hm? That sounds kind of foreign. Where're you from?"
ooc;agh, the shortness. ><

He started in her direction, long limbs swinging as he moved leisurely. "Yeah, well, my parents, the most Dick and Jane conservative type you'll ever meet decided they'd name their kids the most ethnic names they could think of. So now I sound like an African country." he beamed, shaking his head. "I'm from the islands. One of those little American controlled ones."
A glance at any of Zuri's relatives would make it quite clear that the young man had been adopted. There was no trace of blue or grey eyes with pale skin in his gene pool. He was rather tight lipped about the subject, a rarely disclosed fact.
"You still in school? Or did you graduate in June?"

She laughed. "There's nothing particularly wrong with sounding like an African country, is there?" Her voice and expression were the epitome of innocence, but her eyes sparkled mischievously. "And, sadly, I'm going into 12th grade. No freedom yet, I'm afraid." She sighed a little before smiling. "But I don't really mind. I kind of like my high school, if you can overlook the assholes."

"Nah, nothing wrong at all." He'd caught and was now beside her, hands stowed in his sweater front pocket along with the music player. "High school is terrible. I mean, some people love it. But it'll be a rude awakening for them once they get out in to the real world. Far from the beauty contests and drama of it all. It's pretty funny really, watching those who had it all in highschool fall flat on their faces." He said fondly, feeling very wizened despite the mere five year age gap between himself and Alice.

"You sound like such an old man," she said teasingly. "And not everyone who enjoys high school hates real life." She walked along in silence for a few minutes, her hands in the pockets of her sweatshirt. "So I take it high school wasn't the best for you?" She'd picked up on the way that he spoke of it. She suddenly felt very young, as if the five year age gap had been expanded.

"Not so much bad, but well terrible." he laughed, exhaling heavily. Not the best years of his life at all. The gawky brainy brother of the Prom queen. Lovely. "College was better, but even that I'm glad to be over with. I bet you'll be all excited for it. I was." His head cocked to one side, surveying her.

"Ah," she replied, "I'm not too sure how I'm feeling about it, to be honest. High school's not bad, but I wish I were out of it. But at the same time, college could go either way for me; either very well, or extremely bad. Just depends on who I meet, I guess. I've been told on more than one occasion that I don't mesh well with people my own age. Hell, even my teachers told me that they'd probably get along with me better than my classmates. So I'm not too sure. All I know is I'm more than ready to leave home. I'd leave already, but I'd hate to hurt my poor dear mother." She surprised herself by letting the malice and sarcasm drip into her last sentence.

Zuri looked surprised, letting the corner of his mouth raise despite her tone. "Sounds a lot like me, really." he commented sincerely. "Pretty much the same feeling, only I lived in the middle of nowhere. I didn't even know there was big world out there to escape to." He was silent for a while, looking down the dark path they were treading. "Trouble at home?"

"You could say that," she replied carefully. Her past, and her family for that matter, weren't things she liked to talk about a lot. "It's a little.. complicated, if you get what I mean. Not like I get abused or anything," she added quickly, clutching the inside of her left arm. "It's just... it wasn't the nicest place growing up, y'know? So I'm pretty much counting the days 'til I can leave. Same with my sister." She looked at him a little. "It's funny that you mention that. Us feeling the same way, I mean. Just today my-- someone told me that there was no one out there like me." She laughed, a small, humorless sound.

"I get that." he admitted, green gaze now returning back to her. The conversation, albeit interesting, left him feeling kind of raw. Deflecting his own ill-thought out comments, he turned the conversation to his sibling. "I was, I mean, yeah. Same story pretty much. Except the sister part. Mine truly lived in a different household, though we had the same address." He fell silent, body language changing from relaxed a little more rigid. "What... school do you go to?"

"Gothvaen High," she replied without hesitation. She was inwardly smirking to herself; who cares if you weren't supposed to give strangers personal information? Anything to piss off her dear mom... "And I get what you mean about the sister thing. My sister and I... We're only half-related. Same father, different mothers. She's the pretty, outgoing one. Shoe-in for prom queen, all that stuff. But she hates the family almost as much as I do. Her mom didn't, well, react so well when she found out that the man that got her pregnant got another woman pregnant at the same time. My mom's just..." She abruptly stopped talking. Talking about her mom usually lead to either shouting, or tears. Neither one would be a good first impression. "Just difficult," she finally managed. She fixed him with a look and added, "And where did you go to college?"

He nodded and gave a small 'oh', respecting her wish to not pour her heart out to him. He wasn't about to either, and could understand that. The way her story mirrored his astonished him, yet who wouldn't press any further.
"MIT." he said quite proudly, brightening up noticeably, relishing in the chance to mention his post-highschool success. "I graduated early. Honours." he couldn't help but add, feeling his head inflate slightly despite himself.
